ABSTRACT

The provincial governor will surely also have spent time in London and the letter to the groom is one of two scraps of information reflecting a connection between Vindolanda and London. The other is the strength report of the First Cohort of Tungrians which shows that one soldier, probably a centurion, is absent on some duty in London. Such connections are reinforced by the fact that many units, including those stationed at Vindolanda, will have supplied men who were detached for duty with the governor. The Tungrian strength report refers to a group of 46 singulares legati, this unit's contribution to a total corps of 500 infantry and 500 cavalry which functioned as the governor's bodyguard and is normally thought to have been based in the Cripplegate fort in London.6
