ABSTRACT

A constraint ranking that will generate the leftness effect of Cuzco Quechua. Regarding Souletin Basque, the leftness effect in that language can be generated by the constraint ranking. There are at least two possible processing bases for the leftness effects. First, restricting any phenomena to the beginnings or ends of words gives hearers additional cues to word delimitation. Second, restricting contrasts to a particular position in a word reduces ambiguity and lessens the hearer’s burden of recognition. The point of uniqueness of a word is the moment at which it can be distinguished from all other forms in the hearer’s lexicon. The output form tea would be penalized by a constraint requiring segments present in the input to correspond to segments present in the output. Laryngeal features present in the input must also be present in the output.
