ABSTRACT

In the liquid-fuelled area, Iran has, with North

Korean assistance, developed an indigenous capa-

bility to produce Scud type missiles. The Shahab

(Shooting Star)-1 and Shahab-2 missiles are reverse-

engineered copies of the Scud-B and -C systems. The

Shahab-1 can deliver a 1,000kg payload to approxi-

mately 300km, and the Shahab-2, which carries a

payload of about 800kg, can reach 500km. Though

it is unclear to what extent Iran can fabricate all of

the components needed to produce the Shahab-1 and

-2 missiles indigenously, Iran has established the

infrastructure needed to assemble the missiles from

component parts, modify the missile to meet specific

Iranian requirements, and maintain the entire system

- including reconditioning the fuel and oxidizer,

overhauling the launchers, and replacing or repairing

damaged or worn support equipment.
