ABSTRACT

EVERY WRITER wishes to present the world in a new light. Ulrich Beck is one of the few who have succeeded. Over the last decade, he has become one of the most controversial intellectuals in Europe. He is among the founders of modern ecological theory and a leading sociologist with a new theory of modernity. He is also a public intellectual whose essays have been published in popular magazines like Der Spiegel and a thinker whose categories "risk society" and "reflexive modernization" have become part of the sociological vocabulary.
