He is among the founders of modern ecological theory and a leading sociologist with a new theory of modernity. He is also a public intellectual whose essays have been published in popular magazines like Der Spiegel and a thinker whose categories "risk society" and "reflexive modernization" have become part of the sociological vocabulary.
