ABSTRACT

Infrared reflectogram assemblies and infrared photographs reveal the skillful and spontaneous brush and pen underdrawings for Holbein's Portrait of Lady Guildford Reinforcement lines in the colored chalk preparatory sketch for this portrait, and "dry schematic strokes" in the underdrawing, suggest that the sketch may have been used in transferring the image to the panel. The underdrawings reveal a variety of transfer techniques, including transferred lines, grid systems, and pouncing, as well as free-hand drawing.
