ABSTRACT

This research was conducted in Singapore, a highly developed country with a relatively wealthy economy. The population of close to 5 million is multiracial, with Chinese, Indian, and Malay as the major ethnic groups. A large number of people live in Singapore on an immigration permit, which must be renewed annually. These people work in Singapore because of their particular employment, which has economic or other advantages to Singapore. The Singapore government has long recognized that it has limited natural resources and that its human resources are of prime importance. In 2001, some 16,414 children were enrolled in approximately 32 private foreign schools (Zoetmulder, 2003). These children are the focus of the research reported here.
