One of the outstanding speech characteristics that contribute much toward the Spanish dialect lilt is the habit of enunciating each vowel clearly, sharply and distinctly. The only times when vowel glides are used in the Spanish dialect are when a statement is heavily emphasized or when an emphasized syllable, which marks the high note of a sentence, One of the outstanding speech characteristics that contributes much toward the Spanish dialect lilt is the habit of enunciating each vowel clearly, sharply and distinctly. The Spanish dialect should, however, be liquid and mellifluous at all times, with no glottal stops such as are found in American speech. This is a most important vowel change in the Spanish dialect, as it is in all the Romance languages. This short "i" is changed to long "e" (EE) and the Spanish give it a broadened attack, with the lips spread wide, as in "EEf" (if).
