AMOST MEMORABLE description of Oakland, Cali-fornia, was that offered by Gertrude Stein (by way of explaining why she left): "There is no there there." If she had said simply "N othing of interest ever happens there," her remark would not have been remembered, for people-rightly or wrongly-say that about Oakland all the time.
