ABSTRACT

We are not saying that every socio-dramatic play experience in school has to have a formal relationship with writing. There is a danger in a book which highlights the relationships between writing and play that we might seem to be suggesting the exploitation of every play experience to teach children something about authorship. Far from it; our examples are only examples of what can happen. They are certainly not prescriptions for every occasion. Play has many benefits apart from those we have discussed in this book and we certainly have a commitment to allowing children to have those private spaces in classrooms where they can play however they wish. We offer possibilities only for those occasions when a sensitive professional judges them to be appropriate and relevant to the needs and interests of the children.
