ABSTRACT

I ndia-US relations arc ~ntcring a Copernican phase. During the Cold War, the conflict of two alliance systems was at the center of world politics. This made for a relatively si mple and in some ways orderly strategic universe. After the Cold War, the United States and India arc discovering that their dealings with each other are more complex than they had been in the previous fifty years. The certainties ofth, Cold War arc gone, and neither side quite knows how to approach the other. There is a supposition that the two countries should be friendlier and should cooperate, but why and how ?
