ABSTRACT

The statement went on to ex plicitly outline a joint US-China stra tegy for South Asia:

If this joint statement is good evidence of US and Chinese policies toward South Asia, then at least three conclusions can be drawn. First, the United States now views China as an important partner in its non-proliferation strategy vis-a.-vis South Asia, and China has accepted this role. Second, China has accepted the parameters of the international order as defined by the United States, including the tenets of the non-proliferation regime, and is reconciled to being a status-quoist power. Third, India and Pakistan are viewed as problem states that need to be "managed" through a joint US-China partnership.
