ABSTRACT
The tomb chamber itself was to be left with no means of human access. In
some cases pyramids were provided with other rooms with no doorways. The Stepped Pyramid of Zoser for example has a .rerdab near the entrance of its mortuary temple
(top). This was a small cell containing a statue representing the ka or soul-double of
the dead pharaoh. The cell had no doorway but there were two holes at eye level so that the ka could watch people as they came and went. The statue's entombment within the cell echoed the soul's unreachability beyond the wall of death. But with its two watching eyes the serdab must also have been an unnerving reminder of the pharaoh's abiding presence.
