ABSTRACT
The distinction seems so elementary, so why belabor it? Corpus planning has to do with authoritative efforts on behalf of the characteristics of a language per se and status planning has to do with the societal functions of the language to which the authorities aspire, right? Only partially right, because such a simplistic view leaves unanswered many questions about either one and also implies a higher degree of unrelatedness between the two than is actually the case. Life is complicated and so is language planning with its many alternative ins and outs.
