ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by describing the possibilities of using the portfolio for professional preparation, appraisal and promotion purposes. The role of the port.. folio for improvement of one's effectiveness in one's profession or to demonstrate professional knowledge for career advancement is elaborated by reference to examples from the medical and teaching professions. The principIes that underpin the use of portfolios for leaming and assessment purposes conclude the chapter. The six principIes emerged from the research described in chapter 5 and each is discussed in relation to research findings and a review of the literature. Important implications for educators and policy..makers are offered as an attempt to dissemi.. nate and extend the debate for more altemative forms of assessment such as the portfolio.
