ABSTRACT

Discourses about Education What is meant by education? It is not sufficient to define it as the field of practices and discourses concerning childcare, upbringing, formal schooling, and training. For if things are defined thus, one obviously blurs what is most typical: There are at least four fields involved in this definition, each of which, to a large extent, operates independently. There is no institution governing them all, and there is no discourse relevant to all of them. Perhaps the first point to be made, therefore, is that "education" no longer exists.
