ABSTRACT

The phonetic results from my studies of weakening fall into two major groups: results that pattern by manner of articulation but not position, and results that pattern by position in word and/or position with respect to stress. While a priori we might expect all results to show a clear effect of position, in fact the results are split between those that pattern only by manner of articulation and those that pattern by position. Thus I divide the presentation of the results into those categories, covering the results that pattern primarily by manner in this chapter, and covering those that pattern primarily by position in Chapter 5.
