ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the phonetic results that pattern by position in word and position with respect to stress. The patterning for both English and Spanish is discussed in this chapter and results are included here even if they pattern by position in just one of the languages. This chapter is organized as follows: §5.1 covers the durations of segments; §5.2 covers the actual manner of articulation of the segments; §5.3 covers the characteristics of some subcomponents of segments, including closures, bursts, aspiration, and affrication; §5.4 covers intensity of fricative noise; §5.5 covers the linguopalatal contact that patterns by position; and §5.6 summarizes the results.
