ABSTRACT

Informed criticism is an important feature of science. Together with empirical falsifications of a theory's predictions, logical critiques of existing theories are an invaluable means of advancing both the social and physical sciences. And, like all important theories, intergroup contact has received its share of critical attention. In this chapter, we will consider criticisms of intergroup contact theory carefully in order to detect weaknesses of the theory and to learn where theoretical extensions and further research could advance our understanding of the effects of intergroup contact.
