ABSTRACT

Stress! What is it? How do we react to it? What causes it? How does it affect us? Is it all bad? Answers to questions such as these are helpful if adults are to achieve any degree of success in their efforts to control stress in children. That is, they should have some awareness of just what it is they are trying to control. Therefore, it is the function of this chapter to provide the reader with an overview of some of the various aspects of stress. More specific ways adults can help children understand the complex nature of stress will be discussed in Chapter 4.
