ABSTRACT

The Syracuse case was particularly shocking because most media left out the fact that the woman had felt arousal; it appeared that mothers could lose their children merely for breast-feeding beyond the customary allotted time. Even if it had been better known, the fact of arousal should not have been so threatening. Though unusual, sexual arousal while breast-feeding is perfectly normal. In fact, given our culture's sexual attitudes toward breasts, it is quite understandable. But it frightened and confused the young mother, and it upset the person who answered the hotline. None of the parties handled the situation very well.
