ABSTRACT
For a growing girl, the advent of body consciousness often comes with the first appearance of breasts. Sometimes a girl's self-awareness arrives quite innocently and gradually. One woman described how, when she first noticed her nipples were puffing out and gently poked at them to understand what was happening, she discovered what felt like little square boxes hidden inside. She secretly monitored the little boxes as they grew into breasts. Other women remember feeling mortified when they suddenly realized they had full-grown women's breasts. It is not the breasts themselves, but the consciousness of them, that precipitates the crisis.
