ABSTRACT

Another fragment of the mirror of modernization may be seen in the increasing quantity of Balinese written scholarship on music and the shadow play. STSI encourages scholarship by requiring both students and faculty to write (papers, theses, books, articles, and translations), and by publishing its own magazine and journal. Whereas the previous chapter dealt with STSI faculty in terms of their teaching capacity, here I examine the scholarly side of the institution. The aim of this chapter is to expand our perspective of Balinese music from that of a purely oral tradition based on direct contact and practice, to include discourses on music and the shadow play written by Balinese scholars.
