ABSTRACT

The murals are found throughout the construction phases. They contain symbolic and narrative elements. The most important represent strongly realistic battle scenes with ritual and anecdotal qualities, as well as activi ties of agriculture and commerce (Red Temple), symbol ism (Temple of Venus or the Paired Scorpion), and magico-religious mysticism (Building A). Some depict aquatic animals, while others feature serpents, plumed or in jaguar skins. Depictions of humans denote two differ ent groups, those from the Central Highlands (associated with jaguars), and Mayas; the latter are associated with birds, perhaps Tlaloc and Quetzalcoatl. Ritual life is

revealed in the murals, in child burials found in the North Plaza, and in other cultural features.
