ABSTRACT

Ihuatzio (Michoacân, Mexico) This sprawling site (c. 50 hectares) is one of the biggest and most architecturally complex in Michoacân. Together with Tzintzuntzan and Pâtzcuaro, Ihuatzio formed a core area in the Lake Pâtzcuaro Basin, where the political and economic powers of the Tarascan state were centered. Ihu atzio had two periods of occupation: A.D . 900-1200, which may correspond to occupation by Nahuatl-speaking groups, and A.D . 1200-1530, pertaining to the epoch of Tarascan rule.
