ABSTRACT

z Zacatenco (D.F., Mexico) This village site of moderate extent (c. 15 hectares) is situ ated at the southern base of the Guadalupe Hills, on the northwestern edge of Mexico City, and dates to c. 90050 B.C. (uncalibrated radiocarbon date). It was first noted by Franz Boas. George C. Vaillants Trench D at Zaca tenco provided the first stratigraphy within the Formative period for the Basin of Mexico, parts of which were later confirmed by him at El Arbolillo and Ticoman. As at El Arbolillo, farmers here had access to both lakeside and piedmont resources. Remains of habitation terraces are present. Fourteen flexed and extended burials (all but one seemingly pre-Ticoman) had no associated offerings. Pacific shell and greenstone objects suggest contacts west ward. Abundant clay figurines in refuse suggest their tran sient value and use in domestic rituals.
