ABSTRACT

B After about 1359, the Bajío region drew the attention

of developing political centers in Tarascan Michoacán and the Aztec Basin of Mexico. The Aztec Mexica of Tenochtitlán came to dominate the province of Xilotepee from the 1430s to about 1480, while Tarascans conquered Acámbaro and Maravatio. Documentary sources indicate a local, seminucleated population of Otomis, but as the Bajío became a buffer zone between competing Mexica and Tarascans, local populations were forced to relocate within the region.
