ABSTRACT

A thought experiment is a prediction about what is likely to happen in a situation where it would not be easy to carry out a real-life experiment. They lend themselves to situations such as large scale changes (e.g. movement of the planets), small scale changes (e.g. particle theory), long term changes (e.g. ecological or geological change) or working with potentially dangerous substances. It may be possible to find out through research what happens if other people carry out the experiment.
