ABSTRACT

This book provides guidance on alternative assessment strategies for teachers of science. However, in order to be effective in assessment teachers need to do more than use suitable strategies. Assessment and learning will be most effective when teachers also create a productive classroom climate and promote relevant learning and teaching styles. These will determine how readily learners engage with the various activities, how fully they engage and how willing they are to share their ideas. Without proper engagement any assessment activity is likely to be inaccurate as an assessment strategy and ineffective as a learning experience. Conversely, if learners are fully engaged with the activity then they will be more motivated, they will give a more accurate indication of their level of achievement and they will learn more.
