ABSTRACT

It is difficult to do justice to the variety and scope of the many Buddhist socially engaged activities in modern South Korea in a single chapter. I will attempt a broad overview of what is happening in Korea in general from our experience in the capital of Seoul where about a quarter of South Korea's population resides and where many organizations have their headquarters. I will introduce a few of the more dynamic Buddhist organizations and leaders in Korea today. Very little has been available about Korean Buddhist activism in English until now, and I hope this chapter will at least partially fill a gap in the international understanding of the more pressing issues and challenges facing Korean Buddhism as a social force and Korean Buddhists as leaders of social transformation in their nation at the start of the twenty-first century.
