ABSTRACT

Summary The goal of this chapter is to examine and understand how increased life expectancy, demographic shifts and changes in family structures combined with societal changes affect relationships between different family generations. Recognition of these changes and flexibility in adapting to them might be crucial for creating solidarity in intergenerational family relations. Such an understanding is related to the view that the couple and family orientation of social life and the value attached to sociability make the family a main reference point in the ageing process.
