ABSTRACT

B efore I set off to law school, I was told by someone whom I respected greatly that I could not be both a lesbian and a lawyer and that I w ould have to make a choice. I didn’t really have any evidence to contradict that. I

didn't know any gay lawyers when I was in law school or in college deciding to

be a lawyer. But I felt that being a lawyer w ould be the best protection I could

have for protecting my civil rights and the civil rights of others. I think being

gay influenced my decision to be a lawyer more than it influenced my decision

to be a judge.
