Sh a n n o n : In ten th grade, I go t involved w ith a grou p called the E xplorers. It’s a faction th ro u g h th e B oy S couts for students interested in law e n fo rcem en t. T h ro u g h th a t I decided th a t law en fo rce m e n t was so m eth in g I

w anted to go into. I w en t to a ju n io r college and g o t m y tw o -y ear law e n fo rce ­

m en t degree. I was hired th ree m o n th s after m y skills p ro g ram . W h en I was

hired as a police officer I had already w orked for a suburban police d ep artm en t

as a c o m m u n ity service officer for th ree and a h alf years. We handled n o n ­

em erg en cy calls, m o to ris t assist, all th e anim al com p lain ts , and parking

e n fo rce m e n t. We w ere p re tty m u ch “g o -fers” for th e cops but it w as a really

good experience.
