ABSTRACT

The movies The preliminary sample pertaining to the 1990s included the following six titles: John McTiernan’s The Hunt for Red October (1990), Fred Schepisi’s The Russia House (1990), Michael Lehmann’s Hudson Hawk (1991), John Carpenter’s Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992), Craig Baldwin’s Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America (1992), and David Hogan’s Most Wanted (1997). To test the generalizability of the results, additional movies were included in our indepth analysis. These movies were selected based upon the presence of CIA characters in the films, and taking account of their (relatively high) popularity during the 1990s. The additional movies included are as follows: Oliver Stone’s JFK (1991), Phillip Noyce’s Patriot Games (1992), James Cameron’s True Lies (1994), Phillip Noyce’s Clear and Present Danger (1994), Martin Campbell’s GoldenEye (1995), Renny Harlin’s The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), Brian de Palma’s Mission: Impossible (1996), Roger Spottiswoode’s Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Richard Donner’s Conspiracy Theory (1997), Barry Levinson’s Wag the Dog (1997), and Edward Zwick’s The Siege (1998).
