ABSTRACT
In the European Union the competences are not always clearly attributed to one of the levels of the multilevel government structure. This creates the need for vertical coordination (i.e. coordination between the various levels) in order to safeguard consistency and realize effectiveness (see Chapter 2). The objective of this chapter is to describe the various forms of vertical coordination and their advantages and disadvantages.
