ABSTRACT
For as long as Shirazi Jews can remember, they have been living in the Mahalleh, a “quarter” set apart from the other inhabitants of Shiraz. The overcrowding and filth of this area horrified nineteenth century observers, leading one to remark that “the houses resemble the dens of animals rather than the habitations of men” ( Wills, 1887:271).
