This chapter is intended to provide a background to Giddens’s development of structuration theory, looking in rather more detail at his views of what sociology is about and the way it has developed, his criticisms of the ‘orthodox consensus’ which began to break down in the mid-1960s, and the sources from which he develops his own ideas.
