ABSTRACT
Chapter One highlighted several neo-Marxist authors active in education in the late 1970s and 1980s. These efforts were an early foray into the ideological thicket surrounding U.S. schools. (Other well-known progressive voices in education during the 1980s were Stanley Aronowitz, Donaldo Macedo, Ira Shor, and Peter McLaren.) All of us challenged the dominant idea that education in this country was—a political and not involved in reproducing systemic inequalities of the economic and social systems.
