ABSTRACT
This is the first chapter devoted to an in-depth examination of some of Bruner’s key thoughts. We start by looking at what he wrote about how children come to be able to understand their world and the objects and people in it. Bruner called this the development of mind. We might also call it the development of cognition or thinking. His early work here is important to understanding how his thinking developed over time so we continue to pay attention here to those whose work had some influence on his thinking. Writing in the 1960s, Bruner began his consideration of how mind or intelligence develops by looking at two crucial things that set humans apart from other mammals. He looked at the development and the importance of tools.
