Getting back to o ur opening que stion-“Why u se E MDR?”—justifi cation of EMDR training, research, and utilization with military personnel is readily available from the DVA a nd t he DoD’s own Clinical Practice Guideline for th e Management of Post-Traumatic Stress (2004), which concluded that
• Overall, a rgument c an r easonably be m ade th at th ere a re s uffi cient controlled studies that have suffi cient methodological integ rity to ju dge EMDR as eff ective treatment for PTSD (p. 5);
• Foa et al. (1995) note that exposure therapy may not be appropriate for use with clients whose primary symptoms include guilt, anger, or shame (p. 4);
• EMDR m ay be mor e e asily tol erated for pat ients w ho h ave diffi culties engaging in prolonged exposure therapy (p. 2);
• EMDR processing is internal to the patient, who does not have to reveal the traumatic event (p. 1).
