ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, I described the phase of contradiction where the intention is to help people engage in critical thinking and the development of critical consciousness. People are encouraged to question assumptions, explore new ideas, and consider alternative perspectives. In diversity and social justice education, this process involves examining power relationships, structural inequalities, and ideology. It includes personal reflection and critical analysis that usually challenge how people view the world and see themselves. While some individuals may embrace this exploration, others resist. Consider the following situations:

Whenever stories are shared which illustrate how racism affects people of color, a White male asserts that he is really the one being discriminated against.
