ABSTRACT

As with the biotechnologies considered in earlier chapters, nanotechnologies are the subject of great expectations. However, with nanotechnologies optimism is especially high, a commonly held view being (refl ected above) that they will contribute to or constitute a revolution. Comprising phenomena at the molecular (billionth of a metre) level, these technologies are seen to embody unique properties that will create novel opportunities in a range of areas. Current and predicted future technology applications span the fi elds of biomedicine, engineering, information and communication systems, energy storage, and the production of a growing array of consumer goods, including paints and personal care products such as sunscreens and cosmetics (Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars, 2010).
