ABSTRACT

Session structure is a general rubric for conducting cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) sessions. A template helps you organize and prioritize what you do in session. Templates assist you in making the session flow smoothly and logically. With experience, you will find that the structure of the session becomes second nature and you will gain flexibility. Flexibility allows you to tailor your sessions to each individual patient. However, to get to that point, it is important to have a solid grasp of the rudiments and rubrics of session structure. This chapter describes the rudiments associated with mood check-ins, homework review, agenda setting, session content, homework assignment, and eliciting feedback. The “Rubrics” section provides detailed information on implementing the components of session structure.
