ABSTRACT

We are somewhat at a loss how to introduce our readers to an acquaintance with this singular narrative. Of incident it presents little, of character and situation much. The power of genius is often seen in these pages to give efficacy to scenes and reflections, little calculated in their own nature to affect the human mind. Strong feeling, and a depth of reflection on the state and habits of society, claim our attention, and lead us forward at the will of the writer, while an almost total want or disregard of the rules of composition have betrayed him into faults of the first magnitude. We will first analyze the story, and then proceed to make a few remarks on the whole.
