It is customary for Persons, whose Actions have made some Noise in the World, to have their Lives transmitted down to Posterity; and that by those who are wholly unqualified for such an Undertaking, being generally such as have been altogether unacquainted with the People whose Histories they pretend to write, only through common Report, and consequently must take all their Accounts upon Trust. To avoid the like Fate after my Decease, I thought proper, with my own Hand, to throw together the most remarkable Transactions of my Life, tho’ no Man living has a greater Aversion to Scribbling than myself.
