ABSTRACT

Cultic milieu Colin Campbell (1972) suggested that cults arise from a general cultural ethos which he described as the cultic milieu that constitutes a sort of reservoir from which they draw their members. He argued that the cultic milieu includes all deviant belief systems and their associated practices: ‘Unorthodox science, alien and heretical religion, deviant medicine, all comprise elements of such an underground. In addition it includes the collectivities, institutions, individuals and media of communication with these beliefs’ (ibid.).
