ABSTRACT

In this chapter I shall discuss the following three questions: (a) What concepts are (to be) used? (b) What definitions, etc. are (to be) given to them? (c) How are these concepts (to be) related to ordinary usage? I shall also try to link the traditions identified at a very general level in the introduction

with more specific theoretical currents within the social sciences. First, though, I shall briefly raise the general question of the relationship between language and science.
