ABSTRACT
As other activities prevented me from participating in the conference and presenting a paper, I am glad of this opportunity to offer some observations on some of the problems that were raised. 1 Although these observations have mostly been suggested by long and most interesting discussions with Gene Garthwaite and by reading his chapter on the Bakhtiari (whom I too am studying), they seem to me to be relevant to the theoretical concerns that have emerged from several other papers as well as the discussions to which they gave place.
