ABSTRACT

The most fashionable music in eighteenth-century Britain was foreign, principally Italian opera and German orchestral music. British tourists expected to attend musical performances whilst abroad, and to enjoy the music that they heard. Music played a large part for many tourists and it is clear that many were observant and sensitive critics of what they heard.
