ABSTRACT

One of the guiding principles of this book is encouraging children to think. Emotional intelligence is about being attuned to self and others, something that involves heightening our awareness of us in our surroundings and how we interact with those sharing the space, refl ecting on this, considering options, imagining what effect a particular action might have, and so on. In other words, thinking in various forms. Beliefs, however, are about accepting in-formation we have encountered as true and generalising this to the world around us (‘everybody has a cruel streak’), as well as to ‘how we are’ (‘I’m shy’) and ‘how we might perform’ in different situations (‘I’m no good at exams’). On the whole, there is little thinking involved in belief. So how are they formed?
