ABSTRACT

I believe that it is impossible to effectively work with the issue of selfdestructive behaviors without an understanding of attachment and its impact on affect regulation. Seeking out and maintaining safe, healthy attachment is a universally hardwired need. Attachment fulfills our desires for protection, safety, physical contact, belonging, soothing, emotional regrounding, and affiliation with and connection to others (Ogden, Minton, & Pain, 2006).
